Fionnuala O’Leary reports.

For most of us the ability to sort out what we REALLY want and what we are made to THINK we want can be a real headache.

And so it is not surprising that Life Coaching has become a massive phenomenon in the States where people from all walks of life take the time to focus on what they really want.

Irish life coach Carmel Wynne says  ‘You can coach anybody to do anything.  You can coach somebody on their parenting skills, you can coach a teenager to study or you could coach a journalist to de-stress.

The book which opens with a quote from the recently deceased comedian Bob Monkhouse on the concept of success serves as an introduction to the idea of life coaching.

Full time life coach Carmel, who already has two books to her name, is confident that a simple change in the way people think can do much to banish the scourge of negative thinking

The book itself is simply laid out and targets self-esteem and basic problem solving.  In short it is an introduction to coaching and not an answer to every question on the subject.

‘Written in the spirit of Bob Monkhouse’s words, ‘If you paint signs when you could paint sunsets, invent jingles when you might compose symphonies, foregoing eventual achievements in favour of instant reward, that might be regarded as a personal failure.

At the beginning of my life-coaching session I felt as though I was trying to run through mud.  By the end I felt as though I was flying round the room, ready to leave and take on the world.

There have been moments since them that I have stopped to consider things we discussed and on the whole, I feel I have benefited hugely.

You have the talent and aptitude to achieve more in life.  You have all the resources you need to make your dreams a reality.  You don’t need a college degree for success.  Belief in yourself is the key to achieving any outcome you desire.

To combat the nation’s negative vibes, Carmel has written a book called Coaching – The Key to Unlocking Your Potential.  It aims to make people realise that it is not laziness of weakness that stops them achieving their dreams – just a lack of awareness.

In Sex and Young People, Carmel Wynne investigates teenage sexuality and reveals facts that may surprise parents, teachers and even teenagers themselves.

In the authors view, ignorance of the truth about sexuality is a threat to the health and emotional well-being of the young, depriving them of the knowledge to make informed, sensible decisions about their actions.  She challenges the myths and

preconceptions common among young people and gives a frank explanation of the many hazards of irresponsible sexual behaviour.  The issues of contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, peer pressure, casual sex and coming out are explored, along with the emotional side of things – something that is often overlooked.

The author aims to help the parent, teacher or guardian to nurture confidence and self-possession in young people, so that they can have faith in their own ability to make the right choice, instead of the one they feel is demanded by an increasingly high-pressure society.

Relationships and sexuality (1997)

Relationships and sexuality
is a practical handbook for parents, teachers and other adults who are concerned with the healthy sexual and emotional development of young people.  This subject is particularly topical at present because of the controversy about the introduction of formal relationships and sexuality education in Irish schools.  The author places relationships and sexual issues firmly back in the context of family communications and intimacy between parents; of open, honest and clear

communication about sexual issues between children and adults.  Among the areas covered are:
bullet

how to answer the earliest questions of toddlers.

bullet

how to respond to the early sexualisation of children by the media.

bullet

how to facilitate an independent, holistic approach to sex among teenagers who are subject to peer pressure.

bullet

how to communicate honestly with partners as well as with children about sex.

Understanding Communication – The Key to Excellence in Business Relationships

If you have ever experienced frustration or lost business because of miscommunication you will benefit from reading this book.  Wynne explains that the key to improving any relationship, business, social or personal is to understand that words convey only a tiny part of the intended message.

In simple language, using case histories, this practical handbook is easy to use and filled with practical tips.  Wynne is a Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming, which is widely accepted as one of the most powerful communication tools available.  Her book offers a comprehensive overview of what happens when your communication does not get the intended response.  Find practical ways to help you understand how to communicate and get the responses you want.

Understanding communication – The Key to Excellence in Personal Relationships

Any relationship you have will only be as good as your communication.  Your communication is as good as your ability to listen to yourself as well as to the speaker.  In face-to-face communication body signals account for 60-80% of the message, which means that the words used are not that important.  Facial expression, tonality and body language account for the major part of the communication.

This explains why painful misunderstandings occur.  Two people hearing the identical words can make meaning in totally different ways because they interpret the message on so much more than the words they hear.

If you have ever experienced frustration or family rows because of miscommunication you will benefit from reading this book.  Wynne explains that the key to improving any relationship, business, social or personal is to understand that words convey only a tiny part of the intended message.  Discover practical ways to change your communication and improve all your relationships.
